Dining Out - La Familia Authentic Mexican Food
By Christina Killion Valdez
The south-of-the-border version of a small town, family diner. Simple and very casual.
The inspiration for the name of La Familia, which translates as "family" in English, is apparent at this restaurant, run by three siblings, Roberto, Lupita and Juan Gomez.
Their mother, Margarita Gomez, who runs a catering business in the state of Hidalgo, Mexico, even came to Rochester to help with the opening on March 27. "We're learning from her," Roberto said. "She knows everything."
More than anything they strive to serve authentic, traditional Mexican cuisine in a family atmosphere, he said.
Everything is prepared homemade from the salsa and chips that come free with your meal to the Agua de Horchata, a sweet, rice-water drink, made the traditional way instead of from concentrate. The jamica, a cold drink, also is made from the leaves of the plant instead of from a concentrate, for a real taste of Mexico.
