Dining Out - Pho Hoa

By Andrea Faiad

Vietnamese fine dining featuring unique dishes and healthy food.

Tung Vo moved to Rochester from Kansas in April to open Pho Hoa. He had visited the area to see his cousin and liked the "nice people and quiet, good for living" feel the city offers.

After having owned a Chinese restaurant in Kansas, he decided to go with his native cuisine in Rochester.

First, he says, he's Vietnamese. Second, he sees Americans trying to eat healthier, and Vietnamese dishes, which feature fresh vegetables, steamed entrees and hot soups, tend to be lower in fat.

Vo hopes people from all cultures will enjoy his restaurant.

"I opened it for everybody," he says.

Hot pots, served in clay pots, are about $12 and include fish, pork, shrimp or chicken choices, served with steamed rice.

There are also stir-fried entrees for about $8 and Vietnamese specialties, such as half a game hen deep fried and served with two sweet rice cakes, for about $9. Hot and sour soup, which serves two, is about $13 and includes various ingredients such as chicken, shrimp and pork.

Appetizers include egg rolls, spring rolls, grilled sesame beef and chicken wings, ranging from $3 to $5.
